First fight tonight is a barn burner!
Tyson Griffin vs Marcus “Maximus” Aurelio
Aurelio is 10 years older and 4″ taller than Tyson. Aurelio is a world class jiu jitsu fighter who has trained the likes of Thiago Alves. His opponent, Tyson Griffin is a great wrestler who has really good standup to put it mildly.
Aurelio at the center of the ring and Griffin seems to be the one taking the outside and striking in. Both fighters pacing themselves. Aurelio with a wild one-two. Griffin fakes a shot. The crowd gets antsy. Both men still tentative. Griffin with a body punch and takes Aurelio down. Griffin trying to get some shots in as Aurelio tries to work his guard. Griffin gets some punches in but Aurelio still looking for control to put on a submisison. Aurelio has Griffin in his guard. Tyson tries to move away and postures back up and rains a couple of shots in. Both men are back on their feet. Tyson may have got more shots in. Aurelio leaving his punches hanging. Tyson definitely looks better on the feet. Leg kick by Griffin. Tyson with a nice body shot and a right hook. Griffin gets another right hook in. Aurelio tries to get Griffin down with a take down but is unsuccessful. That’s the end of round 1.
Round two begins with Griffin coming out more aggressive. Nice leg kicks by Griffin. Tyson throwing some nice kicks and following up with nice jabs. Griffin gets a glancing left in. Griffin tagging Aurelio everytime he tries to close in. Aurelio looks at sea in the standup against Tyson Griffin. Aurelio tries to get a takedown but has Griffin taking him to the cage wall. Griffin with knees to the thigh of Aurelio. Both men struggle for control at the cage. Tyson is not easy to take down. I wonder if Aurelio really thought he can take him down! Griffin takes Aurelio down and gets top. Aurelio gets position and is on Griffin’s back. Aurelio tries to get an arm bar. Griffin spins out and is now on top. Aurelio with a triangle but Griffin moves out. Aurelio trying to get control but Griffin is obviously stronger here. Griffin with some body shots. That’s the end of round two and another one for Griffin although this was much better for Aurelio.
Well here’s the sad part - As I was covering the event, the electricity to the entire town went off and we were sans power for a whole two hours here.
I apologize to everyone who might have been using this site to check the latest updates on the event. Here’s how the whole deal went down anyways:
New Light Heavyweight champion of the World! - Forrest Griffin by unanimous decision (48-46) (48-46) (49-46).
Patrick Cote defeats Ricardo Almeida by Split Decision (29-28)
Josh Koscheck defeats Chris Lytle by unanimous decision
Joe Stevenson wins!
Apologies once again. Hope to see you soon …
